Ruben Amorim will be ecstatic with fresh news out of Carrington this afternoon regarding player who stunned Guardiola

Lisandro Martinez has returned to full first-team training with the rest of the squad at Carrington today.

The news was confirmed by Manchester United’s official website, which adds that the Argentine international has now made a ‘significant step’ in his rehabilitation by getting back out on the grass.

Previously, when pressed on Martinez’s condition, Ruben Amorim has been reluctant to state a specific time frame as to when fans can expect to see him in action.

United’s coaching staff – along with the physios – have been careful not to rush the centre-half’s recovery for fear of him playing too soon and suffering another setback.

Throughout this three-year Old Trafford tenure thus far, Martinez has been plagued by unrelenting fitness concerns.

He has been limited to just 91 appearances across all competitions and has missed a whopping 81 matches.

This time around, Martinez has been ruled out since February, when he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament tear against Crystal Palace in a home league outing. He swiftly underwent surgery to correct the problem and has been on the mend ever since.

It meant that Amorim was able to have around three months with a fully fit Martinez at his disposal, with the former Ajax star featuring 16 times before his lengthy layoff.

When he isn’t being hampered by such setbacks, the 27-year-old World Cup winner is renowned for being one of the best in his position across Europe.

In fact, Pep Guardiola lavished praise on Martinez after United’s triumph over Manchester City in the 2023/2024 FA Cup final, saying (as cited by Manchester Evening News ): “Lisandro Martinez is top five centre-backs in the world.

“He made the difference in this game by playing passes through our defence.”
