Sir Alex Ferguson believes it could be another decade before Manchester United are strong enough to win the Premier League title again.

Despite some moments of recovery, Ruben Amorim ’s side have been undone by familiar problems this season, already sat 10 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal .

United have dropped seven points in their last three home games with disappointing results against Everton , West Ham United and Bournemouth and will now be without Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo who have departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.

It has been over 12 years since United were last crowned English champions – Ferguson’s final triumph before retiring after 26 years at the helm.

In that time, neighbours Manchester City have lifted the trophy seven times with Liverpool moving back level with United on 20 top-flight titles.

United’s chief executive Omar Berrara last year set the club the target of winning the Premier League’s in 2028 to mark the club’s 150 th anniversary.

But Ferguson fears the wait could extend far beyond that milestone.

‘He [Amorim] is a good personality. It is not easy,’ Ferguson told PressBox PR.

‘I remember looking back on my own time there, starting off when Liverpool were the bee’s knees. They were a fantastic club winning the European Cup four times and all that, but then it took them 31 years to win the league again.

‘We are now in the same situation. It could be ten years, could be 11 years, because of that cycle. It has to be thought out carefully and we have to make sure the recruitment is going to be better than what it was.’

United’s recruitment has been one of the biggest factors behind a decade-long malaise with wrong moves in the transfer market constantly undermining any progress.

The club turned to two Premier League proven options last summer in Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha with Senne Lammens brought in to try and solve the calamitous problems in goal.
