Thomas Frank has defended his Tottenham substitutions despite boos from some supporters during Saturday afternoon's game against Manchester United . The North London side battled to a 2-2 draw with the Red Devils on Saturday afternoon.

Frank ’s former Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo gave the Red Devils the lead only for late goals from substitutes Mathys Tel and Richarlison to flip the game on its head. A late header from Matthijs de Ligt ensured a share of the spoils.

Frank, who was only appointed in the summer, was on the receiving end of criticism from those inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The decision to substitute Xavi Simons with goalscorer Tel with 11 minutes remaining was roundly booed by the home fans .

But Frank has continued to defend his decisions and insists that every change he makes is in an effort to secure victory. Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: "Sometimes you are lucky but of course, I would say that every single time I take a decision to sub a player, it is with one aim: to make the team win, or back in the game, or try to see the game out of whatever.

"One aim: try to win the game. No doubt Mathys did well, great goal, great involvement and in general I think we played a fine game, positive, but also you need a little bit of freshness."

Asked if he heard the fans booing, he replied: “I just say every time I make a decision it is with one aim. To make the team better.”

One of Frank’s other decisions throughout the game was to take Argentine defender Cristian Romero off. But the Tottenham boss has confirmed that his withdrawal was just precautionary.

Frank added: “Yeah, he was just done physically. He just came back from that injury. He's fine.”

The Tottenham boss was also asked if his exit could potentially have had an impact on De Ligt’s eventual goal but insists it would have made very little difference.

He said: “Yeah, but I think his position, he wouldn't have been near the goal anyway, so it's a cross on the side, and then he would have been in the middle zone, so this was back post, so that wouldn't have affected anything.”

Tottenham head into the November international third in the Premier League table having won five out of their opening 11 games.
