Upamecano or Schlotterbeck? Bayern’s defensive dilemma

Time is running out at FC Bayern . While the contract poker with Dayot Upamecano drags on, a prominent alternative, Nico Schlotterbeck , is coming into focus. For Munich, it’s no longer just about sporting issues – it’s about a tough cost calculation

FC Bayern want to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, but the Munich club are treading water. The Frenchman has clearly set out his conditions: an annual salary of around 20 million euros for a new contract and a hand money of around 20 million euros, as reported by BILD . Upamecano is thus aligning himself with Alphonso Davies, who is said to have collected a bonus of around 22 million euros for his extension

If you extrapolate these demands to a five-year contract, the total package comes to around 120 million euros, an enormous sum – even for the German record champions

At the same time, Nico Schlotterbeck is being discussed intensively at Säbener Strasse. The BVB star is regarded as a professional player who would fit perfectly into Bayern’s requirements profile: German international, strong left-footed player, leadership potential. But here, too, the bill is anything but small

According to information from BILD , Borussia Dortmund would demand a transfer fee of around 50 million euros in the event of a sale. Added to this would be a salary package that is likely to be at least 15 million euros per year in Munich. By comparison, Schlotterbeck currently has a new contract at BVB worth around 14 million euros including bonuses

Extrapolated over five years, a Schlotterbeck deal would therefore end up at around 125 million euros – around five million more than an extension with Upamecano

It is worth noting that there is hardly any financial difference between the two scenarios for FC Bayern . Neither Upamecano nor Schlotterbeck would be a cost-cutting solution. The decision comes down to a fundamental strategic question: do they opt for continuity with an internationally established central defender – or a German defender with prospects?

Upamecano or Schlotterbeck – this decision will not only shape the defense, but also the salary structure of FC Bayern for years to come.
