Whitwell: Ruben Amorim asked Man Utd’s first-team squad if ‘bomb squad’ player should be reintegrated over summer
Ruben Amorim reportedly sought the opinion of his players to gauge whether Tyrell Malacia should be reintegrated into the first-team squad over the summer.
According to a new report from The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell this morning, the Manchester United boss ‘canvassed’ the team’s opinions when the full-back became the only member of the ‘bomb squad’ to fail to secure a move elsewhere.

Antony (Real Betis), Alejandro Garnacho (Chelsea), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona, loan) and Jadon Sancho (Aston Villa, loan) had all embarked on new ventures by September’s deadline day, leaving Malacia at Carrington and still outcast from the rest of the group.

The occasional opportunity had been there for him to leave, but nothing materialised. For example, Malacia was said to be on the verge of joining Spanish outfit Elche on a season-long loan until talks collapsed after the two clubs couldn’t agree on a buy option/obligation.
He was subsequently approached by Eyupspor in a move that would’ve seen him follow Andre Onana over to Turkey, though Malacia was unwilling to sign off on the deal.

United’s players ‘spoke in favour’ of the Dutch international returning to the fold and, eventually, Amorim welcomed Malacia back to training .
That being said, he has yet to feature in a competitive game since January, and has only made the matchday squad once this season for last month’s home win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Presumably, Malacia will be sent on loan in January to actually start playing some football again, after which his United contract will expire in June 2026.
