Bruno Fernandes' Man Utd release clause bombshell emerges just before Aston Villa clash

Manchester United's skipper Bruno Fernandes reportedly has a release clause in his contract that is only applicable to clubs outside the Premier League . Since joining from Sporting in January 2020 for just under £50million, the Portuguese midfielder has become a key player for the Red Devils.
He was appointed captain by ex-manager Erik ten Hag in 2023 and has since racked up over 300 appearances for the club. Under the guidance of Ruben Amorim this season, Fernandes has netted five goals and provided seven assists in his 17 outings across all competitions.
His importance to the team is undeniable, but there was a chance he might not have been at Old Trafford this season if certain members of United's top brass had their way last summer.
Earlier this month, Fernandes dropped a bombshell, revealing that some were trying to push him out of the club during the previous transfer window after a hefty offer came in from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
Despite the prospect of a significant salary increase, Fernandes chose to stay at Old Trafford, with Amorim also keen to retain him, despite apparent opposition from higher up.
"The club wanted me to go, I have that in my head," he recently confessed to Canal 11. "I told the directors this, but I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision.
"I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club's side, I felt a bit like, 'if you leave, it's not so bad for us.' It hurts me a lot.
"More than hurting, it makes me sad because I'm a player they have nothing to criticise about. I'm always available, I always play, good or bad.
"I give my all. Then you see things around you, players who don't value the club as much and don't defend the club as much... that makes you sad."

Following the interview, which has once again cast doubt over Fernandes' future at Old Trafford, it has now come to light that the midfielder may have an exit clause written into his deal.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the clause can only be activated by clubs outside England. "There is a release clause in the contract of Bruno Fernandes," Romano revealed in his latest YouTube video.
"And the clause is not valid for Premier League clubs. It's only for clubs abroad. It is slightly over €60million (£52.5m). So, nothing is imminent.
"Nothing is happening. For the summer transfer window, I would keep an eye on the interest from Saudi because I think from Saudi, they can return for Bruno Fernandes.
"Then it's going to be up to Bruno, up to Man Utd again. Let's see what's going to happen before or after the World Cup."
Meanwhile, United are gearing up for Sunday's Premier League clash against Aston Villa . A triumph in the Midlands will bring them on par with Liverpool and Chelsea , each holding 29 points.
