Malo Gusto's one-word response says it all after Chelsea star ends unwanted record

Malo Gusto needed just one word to summarise his first-ever senior goal: “Finally”.

After Chelsea were booed off at half-time, the French international was the unlikely man to break the deadlock against rock bottom Wolves. Gusto, 22, ghosted in at the far post, untracked by anyone in old gold, to notch for the first time in 165 career appearances. He celebrated vigorously, alongside delighted - and some, admittedly, shocked - team-mates.

In the stadium it lifted the tension and allowed Chelsea to ease to victory. On social media it allowed for jokes, injured centre-back Levi Colwill leading the throng of friends and team-mates: “I don’t believe it. Mon garçon [my son] scored”.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca hopes Gusto now gets a taste for scoring, declaring: “Last season [Marc] Cucurella scored six or seven goals and hopefully Malo can score more goals this season.”

“Malo was close so many times and we like full-backs attacking and arriving inside the box. Malo is one of our main players because he allows us to be versatile. So we are very happy for Malo.”

But while Gusto admits he's “hungry for more”, his main concern isn't goals, but trophies.

"It was a big win. The performance was really important for us before the international break," said Gusto.

“We’re all young players, we have to keep building and to fight for titles. We are Chelsea. We want to show the fans and prove we can compete.

“Now we grow as a team. Last season was great in terms of titles, but this season we have to fight for more.”

Chelsea will travel to Burnley on November 22 in their next game after the international break.
