Separated by ten points and ten places in the Premier League table ahead of gameweek 14, Manchester United and West Ham United will bring the midweek action to a close when they meet at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
Manchester United reignited their resurgence last weekend with a 2-1 comeback victory at Crystal Palace, while West Ham were left frustrated after Lucas Paqueta’s controversial red card contributed to a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool.
United’s win at Selhurst Park ended Crystal Palace’s longest-ever unbeaten home run in the Premier League, as Oliver Glasner’s side had gone 12 consecutive games without defeat on their own turf. Jean-Philippe Mateta’s retaken penalty put Palace ahead, but goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount—both set up by Bruno Fernandes’ free kicks—turned the game in United’s favor.
The victory was a much-needed response for the Red Devils following their disappointing home loss to 10-man Everton. Now sitting seventh in the table, United are just three points behind third-placed Chelsea as gameweek 14 approaches.
Since a rocky start to the season, with four defeats in their first seven matches across all competitions, Ruben Amorim has overseen just one loss in United’s last seven outings. However, the Portuguese manager faces the prospect of an unwanted record: if United lose on Thursday, Amorim will have suffered 10 Premier League defeats at Old Trafford in just 20 matches—reaching that milestone faster than any other manager in the club’s history.
December has not been kind to Manchester United in recent years, as they are currently on a three-game Premier League losing streak in the month, failing to score in any of those matches. Still, the Old Trafford crowd may have more to cheer about than their visitors, whose three-match unbeaten run ended against a resurgent Liverpool side last weekend, thanks in part to Paqueta’s dismissal.
Between goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, Paqueta received his marching orders after dissent, then made headlines with a fiery online attack on the FA, criticizing their lack of support during his spot-fixing investigation—a case in which he was ultimately cleared.
Depending on other results this week, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, currently 17th, could find themselves in the relegation zone before Thursday’s kickoff. The West Ham manager will be seeking his first Premier League away win with the club at the fifth attempt. The last time a West Ham boss failed to win any of their first five top-flight away games was Avram Grant in 2010.
