PSG Stun Bayern 2-0 with 9 Men in Epic UCL Semifinal
PSG are in the semifinals after beating Bayern Munich in one of the best games of the season in world soccer. Goals from Doué and Dembelé, the second of which came when PSG had only nine players on the pitch due to red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernández, brings Luis Enrique's side to within two games of their perfect campaign.
The game was played without respite. Steals in the opponent's half, individual actions of exquisite quality and tactical situations that left no room for error. Interventions by Donnarumma and Neuer prevented the carousel of chances and goals.
Kvaratskhelia opened hostilities with a robbery of Olise that Doué finished high. Bayern's response was to stifle PSG for a quarter of an hour, perhaps the most uncomfortable stretch of the match for Luis Enrique's side in recent months.
It is true that PSG have so many resources that they are also capable of defending their area like the best. Of Bayern's crosses in the first half, as many as six into dangerous territory, only one was finished by Kane - and with Pacho on top of the Englishman. If the opponent dares to shoot at goal, as in a shot by Olise and a cross-shot by Pavlovic, they find a Donnaruma who is finally among the best goalkeepers in the world.
PSG lost more balls at the start than ever before, but flew when they managed to get out from under Bayern's pressure. A great move by Barcola led to an attack in which Kvaratskhelia headed Achraf's cross into the side-netting. The Georgian went to redeem himself soon after, but his marvelous individual play ran into Neuer twice. Fabian, always good, also missed a back pass from Doué.
Musiala's serious injury
In the last attack of the first half, Musiala's left foot gave way after getting caught under Donnarumma's body. The image, overwhelming, made the protagonists went to the locker room with their hands on their heads at the suffering of their teammate.
The second act started with a one-on-one from Barcola against Neuer that again brought out the premium version of the German goalkeeper. Both teams took a short break until they got back into the rhythm. Olise had the first from Gnabry's pass, but with Pacho on top it is difficult to finish successfully.
Dembélé took the field
Neuer missed his second ball with his feet. The first he saved with a quick defensive reaction. The second, with an empty net, was sent wide by Dembélé.
Joao Neves robbed Kane, launched the attack and passed to Doué for the first. Neuer, covered by up to three teammates, tried to guess Doué's intention . The goalkeeper missed the wrong post and slipped. 1-0 to PSG, but there was much more to come.
Willian Pacho sent himself off with a criminal tackle on Goretzka and Lucas Hernandez with an elbow on Guerreiro. Luis Enrique's men, in an unprecedented scenario for them, not only resisted the German attacks, but also had the luxury of winning the match.
Dembélé hit the crossbar before Achraf had his umpteenth attacking chance. The Moroccan then gave the 2-0 lead to Dembélé. With nine players. What a great team.
