The miracle Lionel Messi needs to break an important MLS record with Inter Miami

Lionel Messi is currently the player with the most titles in soccer history after adding his 47th trophy by winning the MLS Cup 2025 Eastern Conference championship .

On Saturday, November 29, Inter Miami defeated New York City FC 5-1 at Chase Stadium, where Leo did not score any goals but did assist on one, becoming the top assist provider in soccer history (405). Now, he is going for a new record .

For the MLS Cup final , Inter Miami will host Thomas Müller and the Vancouver Whitecaps , who defeated San Diego FC 3-1 on Saturday. The two teams will face off on Saturday, December 6, at Chase Stadium, where both teams will be looking for the win, but Leo could be going for something more.

Carlos Valderrama shone thanks to his skill with the ball and, above all, his assists. In the 1990s and 2000s, he racked up 26 assists in a single MLS season with Tampa Bay , something that has never been repeated.

The 38-year-old Argentine captain is following in the footsteps of "El Pibe" and is currently five assists away from catching up with the former Colombian player, as he has 21. However, this feat could be more difficult to achieve considering that he only has 90 minutes left in the final against the Whitecaps.

If he succeeds, Lionel would become the second player to reach 26 assists in a single MLS season .

In addition, if Inter Miami scores one more goal , it would surpass Toronto's 17 goals in the 2016 playoffs , but if it scores two , it would break the record held by LA Galaxy with 18 goals scored last year.

Since Messi joined the Florida team in July 2023 , he has won three titles : the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, and most recently, the MLS Cup Eastern Conference title.
