Steve McManaman gives Liverpool players ONE instruction amid Mohamed Salah saga - after star's outburst at club and Arne Slot

Former Liverpool favourite Steve McManaman has revealed how he would resolve the Mohamed Salah saga if he was inside the Reds' dressing room.

Salah has been the headline story over recent days following an explosive interview he gave to reporters after Liverpool's 3-3 draw at Leeds on Saturday having been left on the bench at Elland Road.

Salah remarkably accused the club of throwing him under the bus and said he had no relationship with boss Arne Slot .

The outburst has led to suggestions Salah could leave Liverpool in the upcoming January transfer window, with the Egyptian having previously been linked with a big-money move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL) along with the MLS .

On Wednesday, SPL chief Omar Mugharbel then admitted Salah was a target for the top clubs in the Middle Eastern league.

The forward was left out of Liverpool's squad for their 1-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan on Tuesday night, and McManaman said the situation needs to be solved imminently.

'I think that's the important part in the coming hours and days,' he told TNT Sports . 'He leaves for AFCON on Monday and they've got Brighton at the weekend.

'It would be nice if something is sorted out between now and Saturday.'

He later added: 'It could be any of the players. He’s got relationships with Virgil van Dijk for the last eight years, and Andy Robertson for last eight years. Everybody’s close in that dressing room.

'I’d have a word with him if I’d known him for that long saying “Oi, this is not good for you and it’s not good for the team going forward.”

'This has to be nipped in the bud before he goes to AFCON. You can’t have six weeks of everyone thinking about rumours and innuendos: “what’s this”, “what’s that?” “Will he come back in January?"

‘This needs to be nipped in the bud now before he goes because it will not do anybody any good if it carries on over the next six weeks.'

Speaking after Liverpool's win over Inter, Slot had hinted that there could be a way back for the Egyptian if he acknowledges that he made a mistake.

Speaking to pundit and fellow Dutchman Clarence Seedorf on Amazon Prime, he said: 'You say everyone makes mistakes in life, so the first thing should be: does the player think he's made a mistake as well?

'And then the next question is, should the initiative come from me or him? That's another question to answer.'

Slot later rowed back on his comments with a mixed message, saying: 'Clarence said that in his opinion and I didn't say who should make the first step.

'Tonight it should be all about the players that are here. In the rich history Liverpool has had they have had many of these evenings.

'(The performance) was all I could ask for, I think it was the fourth game in 10 days, that is not what you see a lot with only 13 outfield players available with experience. After the blow we had conceding the 3-3 in Leeds then in this stadium against such a strong Inter team, we hardly gave away a chance.

'We had a great mentality second half, we get better and better.'

Salah's comments have attracted criticism from Liverpool legends, with Jamie Carragher initially labelling his statements as 'a disgrace', although he later toned down his criticism.

Steven Gerrard was also less than impressed with Salah, yet he did try to look at things from the 33-year-old's point of view.

'He's obviously really upset he's not playing, which I respect. He obviously wants to help the team, which I respect,' the former Reds captain told TNT Sports ' The Breakdown.

'A couple of lines about throwing people under the bus, wrong. Need to reverse a little bit away from that, to deal with that with the manager. This needs Virgil van Dijk to go, "How are we sorting this out?" Not even for so much for the benefit of the club, or the team, it's the fans.

'No one's perfect and we've all had head loss as players, where we've done emotional things. I think in time when this all calms, Mo will go, "I shouldn't have said that. I maybe shouldn't have said that and I was a bit emotional and a bit hasty".

'At the end of the day, Liverpool need Mo Salah back playing well and scoring goals because he is the best player, the best scorer, and he will help them get out of this. If this goes on, this is bigger than what we all know and what we see.'
